A rant, a soapbox, call it what you will.
The news seems to think it's very pertinent to keep wasting film on the topic of The Da Vinci Code: Fact or Fiction?

Call me crazy, but I'm going to say it's fiction. Why? Because I'm a bad Catholic? No, because I have this crazy hunch. Perhaps it is fiction BECAUSE IT'S A FUCKING NOVEL.

Get over it, people. Look, Anne Rice wrote a book about Jesus. Go bother her. Hey, I'm sure there are plenty of heresies out there and gay rights things to protest. Shut up. It's a book.

Let's take a look at the real things versus the not-real things:
Opus Dei: Real sect.
The Catholic Church: Real!
Tom Hanks, Superactor and Everyman: Real.
The general Planet Earth as we know it: Real.

Symbology: A nonexistent subject.
Opus Dei as Evil Zionist Catholic conspiracy group: Nonexistent.
Conspiracy to cover up Jesus's wife and kids: Definitely nonexistent.

So GOOD GOD, stop protesting, you are protesting fiction. As in fairytales. As in, didn't happen and not very likely to in the future. If you want to protest fiction, protest the Bush Administration. They're publishing new lies every day.

Current Mood: aaaaaaaaaagh.

Once again, people have got to be out of their heads if they think the book is real. I think at the very end it makes a good point about religon, but HELLO THE BOOK AND MOVIE ARE NOT FACTUAL AS FAR AS THE PLOT GOES KTHX.

That made me laugh rather heartily. Mind if I metaquote? (Anne Rice metaquotes are always awesome.)

Personally, I believe that Jesus and Mary Magdalene were married and had kids and all that, and that the church covered it up. However, I don't believe that because I read it in the Da Vinci Code. I haven't even read the book, or seen the movie. And I'm not sure if I want to. People need to settle down.

Any particular reason you think that? I'm curious.

S'interesting how this one has run and run ever since the Da Vinci Code was published.

The "Jesus was married to Mary Magdalene" theory has been around for years. Supporters point to passages in some of the Gnostic Gospels as proof, one in particular has Peter asking JC why he thinks more of Mary than of the rest of them and could be construed as evidence of a relationship between the two of them. Elaine Pagels excellent book The Gnostic Gospels covers this in detail.

There is actually a very interesting novel to be written about the whole issue but the Da Vinci Code isn't it.
